West Orange encompasses approximately 12 square miles, spread over two ridges and two valleys of the Watchung Moutain range. Approximately a quarter of the Township’s land is open space consisting of municipal and county parks as well as public and private golf courses.
Portions of Eagle Rock and South Mountain Reservations provide hiking trails, ball fields, bridal paths. As well, the Turtle Back Zoo and the South Mountain Ice Skating Arena lie in the township.
Home to almost 45,000 inhabitants, a large number of residents of this picturesque suburban community commute to nearby Newark and New York City via excellent bus service, train service from adjacent towns and major highways. Senior residents enjoy in-town mini-bus service.
House prices range from the low $100,000s to about $700,000, while the Llewellyn Park area homes reach as high as $2 million. In the 1850’s Llewellyn Park was chosen as the first residential development in America, with approximately 175 homes on multi-acre lots. This prestigious retreat is a model of landscape architecture with various styled homes of European design.
Several prestigious private schools are located here. The township’s fine public school system includes 7 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and West Orange High School.
West Orange’s most famous citizen is Thomas Edison. Both his home and laboratory have been preserved and are maintained by the National Park Service.
